Hamilton MPs All Aboard for Auckland Commuter Train- Joint press release from Martin Gallagher, Sue Moroney and Nanaia Mahuta

08.08.2008

Labour’s Hamilton MPs are pledging to advocate for government funding to re-establish a commuter train service to Auckland in Labour’s fourth term in government. Nanaia Mahuta, Martin Gallagher and Sue Moroney are joining forces to lobby for the train service now that their government has purchased rail assets and launched KiwiRail.

"It would require significant Government investment, and this Labour Government has shown its commitment to investing in a future that helps New Zealanders with rising fuel costs and also reduces harmful emissions," said Sue Moroney.

"This country's largest and fourth largest cities are only 126 km apart and can sustain a commuter train service," said Martin Gallagher. He and the other two Labour MPs acknowledged the excellent advisory work done to date by Hamilton City Council, Environment Waikato and the Regional Land Transport Committee. "We pledge to continue to work with local government to bring about the reinstatement of the Hamilton to Auckland rail service," Mr Gallagher said.

"Securing a Hamilton-Auckland commuter rail service will go a long way towards improving transport options for many residents who commute to and from work in these cities," said Nanaia Mahuta.

"In the medium to long-term Waikato will continue to increase its economic contribution to the growth of the region more so the Auckland-Tauranga-Hamilton triangle is an important economic hub for the nation.  The ability to secure a main-trunk service will be a significant achievement," she said.

The MPs favour an option which would require two new train stations to be built at Claudelands or Ruakura and Te Rapa.  The existing train station at Frankton would also be included in the new service.

Nanaia Mahuta and Martin Gallagher are campaigning to retain their electorate seats of Hauraki-Waikato and Hamilton West, while Sue Moroney is campaigning to win Hamilton East.
