US-India civil nuclear agreement

Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) discussions on the US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement will resume in Vienna on 4 September, after two days of wide-ranging discussion on the Agreement at the end of last week, Disarmament and Arms Control Minister Phil Goff said today.

The Agreement requires an exemption to NSG guidelines. This would allow any interested country to supply India with nuclear materials and technology to expand its civil nuclear programme, despite the latter not being a signatory to the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

Phil Goff to attend Asean Economic Ministers meeting in Singapore

Trade Minister Phil Goff departs for Singapore today for the annual Asean-CER Ministers meeting, which includes two days of negotiations towards an FTA between New Zealand, Australia and the 10 Asean countries.

"The Asean - Australia - New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) will have a number of economic and strategic benefits for New Zealand," Phil Goff said.

New Zealand and Australian Defence Ministers meet in Wellington

The main focus of a meeting in Wellington today between the New Zealand Defence Minister Phil Goff and his Australian counterpart Joel Fitzgibbon was a review of the closer defence partnership to ensure it continued to be prepared for, and responsive to, contemporary security challenges, Mr Goff said.

While the two defence forces have always been close, successive deployments on combined and coalition operations have accelerated efforts to deepen interoperability. The Ministers agreed on the mutual benefits of sustaining this strong momentum.
